Yesterday, January 27, 2012 at 1837 UTC, satellites detected a powerful X2 class solar flare. The flare originated from sunspot 1402.
The explosion caused a spectacular CME - Coronal Mass Ejection which fortunately is not directed towards Earth. In any case, the protons on their way to our planet have been boosted and so a small radiation storm is moving toward us.
It’s moving through space at 2500 km/s as predicted by the Goddard Space Weather Lab. It is dcheduled for earth impact January 30-31.
There should be no significant effect to HF propagation.
