DxCoffee @ 4U1ITU

Saturday, the 14th February, the DXCoffee flag waved at the ITU. Colleagues Giorgio IZ4AKS and Chris IX1CKN had a chance to visit 4U1ITU, the station owned and run by the International Amateur Radio Club, located inside the International Telecommunication Union building in Geneva, Switzerland. It’s been a unique experience for our writers, as they were also allowed a couple hours operating (that occurs under the callsign 4U1WRC). Giorgio checked in on the upper bands, and logged some 350 QSOs. Chris, for his part, chose 40 meters and worked some fifty European stations.

Special thanks to who made this possible: Hans, PB2T and Attila, OM1MA. If you’d like to delve deeper into the subject, check out Chris’ blog: “Polaris shining in Geneva“.

I had the great pleasure of operating from 4U1WRC (4U1ITU) during the 2007 WRC — I was 13, and my Dad was a delegate to the WRC, and managed to get me a pass to the ITU. It was my first (and thus far only :/) taste of being DX. It was a LOT of fun, and it’s a great station. I got to meet both Attila (in charge of licensing — a great guy and he liked me!) and Hans, who operated a lot and was the main fellow doing the CQ WW SSB contest that 4U1WRC participated in, and I spent a good many hours myself helping out with.

Great to hear them on the air again, brings back great memories of some of the best 3 weeks of my life!
