Highwire

19 Nov 2011 / 2 Comments / in Hamradio current affairs/by IX1CKN

Everyone who played intelligently with a radio knows that, as low as you move on the frequency side, you need an horizontally polarized antenna to be heard well at a distance. That’s what I learnt as an SWL, and that’s what my “Fishing rod” proved me, with not the best performance on 80 meters. So, I decided to fill – at least on the listening side – this gap, and, since my space allows, I stretched a wire from Read more →

Almost twenty years…

15 Jun 2011 / 0 Comments / in Spectrum obsessions/by IX1CKN

1st_QSO…after switching on a radio for the very first time (think I did tune on Radio Prague on 1287 kHz, or on Deutschlandfunk on 1539 kHz), I got communicated today my freshly assigned italian ham callsign. You can read it on the header of this blog, but you won't be able to hear it on the air shortly (in the picutre, I'm in my HB9EYT clothes). The "general authorization" is still missing, but I think it won't ask that much time.

Meanwhile, other than growing old, I had all the fun on this Earth as an SWL and BCL. I did wait before turning into an ham. Always thought that "Speaking is a need, but listening a talent". So, I didn't really feel the need, so far, but I lately changed my mind, as being silent all those years turned out to be also a bit boring. Therefore, tonight I felt it was right and opportune to start a new experience. Something that would bring on an (almost) daily basis writing about my radio driven life (as I sometimes did on the italian monthly magazine "CQ Elettronica" or on the "DXCoffee" website).

So, here comes "From DC to Daylight", following a monicker that old friend and radio mentor Andy Lawendel glued on my shoulder a few days after making my aquaintance. It will be a collection of everything you see mentioned in the header, plus a brain antidote for the neuronic atrophy that Social Networking causes day after day. Only "Twitter" will remain in use (you should be able to see the widget, on the left), as it can prove useful for instant comms on propagation conditions, or on quick loggings.

That said, I hope you'll enjoy the journey. Just a note: the "Link" column is made of the sites/blogs I check/read almost everyday, or that suit my radio tastes (that aren't so common, as you'll learn day after day). This blog isn't (yet, at least) what can boost your popularity, but if you think it would be neat to appear on the column, just drop me a line with your URL, and I'll gladly oblige.

73,
Chris
